Inspection cover - where to buy?
Jan 19th, 2006, 4:52pm

We have a 50/60cm square sewer cover in our front drive. Anyone know where I can get a strong cover for it in the Huntingdon/Cambs area?

The problem is that lorries sometimes drive over the thing and it keeps getting broken.  I made a reinforced concrete slab to go over the top last year and it survived ok until the water company came along and decided to cut a 20cm hole in it and install a small hatch in the middle!!!

I guess what I need is a thick steel plate about 60-70cm on a side to put over the top.

Thanks for that. The Drain cover is actually wanted in Belgium and Dartford is on-route! I'll give them a call if I can't find one in Cambs before I have to set off back across the channel.

Another option is go to a local steel fabricators and get them to fold one up from some steel chequer plate/durbar to your exact sizes. Even ask them to get it galvanised if you wanted!

Got a 15 ton rated cover AND a thick steel plate! Think I'll also put in a concrete post or two to stop them turning.

Somone has already tried to drive over the white blocks put down as a temporary measure.

Update:

Woken up today by the sound of a small truck driving off. The water co has been and fixed the man hole cover! Now I'm confused. Who called them I wonder? Why didn't they ring the bell?

They've concreted down a frame and cast iron cover. All the builders merchants told me that iron covers were too brittle and you need a steel one rated for 15 tons ... which I had still sitting in the back of my car. Bugger.

Can't work out if I should be please someone else fixed it or annoyed because it probably won't last Smiley
