Possibly out of date but..

"Practical House Building" by Robert Matthews
http://www.blackberry-books.co.uk/British_book_pages/phb.htm
Quote:
This book describes how a house is built stage by stage, from laying foundations to putting on a roof and fitting out the house. Garden works, including drain laying, are also covered. In addition, the basic techniques of the skills required are also explained

Here is a house build diary from start to finish. Great house..

PS How did the planning permission go?
