Cross Bridging/Bracing
May 28th, 2006, 10:57am

Hi

To get a constant fall on the waste pipe run I need to get through the cross bracing which is as shown.

...

The extension has been built about 5 years (probably irrelevant) but can I remove part of the cross bracing and if so do I need to replace it with some form of brace or noggin/dwang?

Thanks

it does not really matter, where these bracings are, the BCO like to see them in, and they do actually do replacement thin sheet steel/stainless steel ones, so you can quite happily remove the pair you need, and if you can not replace them else where along the particular pair of joists, you can use the thin metal ones ...  all they are in there for are to stop the joists twisting/moving around!!
so feel free!! move to suit!!

If you can't get herringbone strutts in because they don't leave enough space for the pipe you can always fit a solid piece of wood and drill a hole in that for the pipe.

Easier still is to remove the cross bracing as required and replace it with a solid noggin just above the plasterboard and another just below the floor deck.

This makes it easier to install the waste pipe as you fit the lower noggin first then install the waste pipe then fit the top noggin above it.

You can use anything suitable but 3 x 2 cls is ideal.

Always screw the noggins into place, nailing may disturb the ceiling below.  Put some celafelt or similar where the waste pipe may rub any timbers as this may creak as it expands/contracts.

the local BCO's around here won't allow the strip bracing/herring bone to be replaced with "SOLID" noggins any more JD!! they have to be either timber strip or those fancysteel bracings!!! Shocked Embarrassed

If you do the whole floor with solid braces it becomes a bit inflexible, but the odd one Undecided

I've just looked it up its "to remove the unwanted individuality of each joist" and to "prevent joists bending sideways"

Solid struts are "costly, add unnecessary weight and create an inflexible floor"
