Blockwork
Jul 13th, 2006, 2:30pm

Hi can anyone throw any light on this?

I asked both Build It magazine & Buildstore what I should expect to pay per sq mt to lay blockwork in the Southeast.

I received the following replies, Buildstore £10/12 per sq mt & Build It £22/26 per sq mt depending on block size.

I cannot believe there is such a difference in opinion, are any of them right & if there are any brickies reading this what would you charge please.

With thanks, locton

it all depends on the "BLOCK" in question really Locton

as you have so many to chose from, 4, 6 or 9" wide, aircon,clinker-ash, celcon(lightweight), concrete blocks (hollow or full types) or even concrete blocks witha fair face for doing the obvious FACE work!!

i think the best way, is to work out WHAT block you intend using/specified, and then ask JD the average for that  type of block tht he charges, you wil also have to take into account any complicated areas!! doglegs etc!!

so work out what you need and the repost here for JD to answer!!

Hi wolf thanks for your reply. We are going to use Thermalite 4 Newton, 100mm.  Saying that the information that I got from Build It & Buildstore was without them knowing what block I was using.

Ok, let's go............

The rate for blockwork depends on soooooooo many factors.

The most important factor is "What are you building?"

If it's a warehouse with enormous long flanks then the rate comes down to about £15m² (labour only) but if it's an small extension or a complex structure then up to £30m² is more likely.

Okay thanks for your reply’s. we are building a 2000 sq. ft extension, basically we have a single storey bungalow, we have erected a two storey timber frame  as part of phase one behind the existing bungalow and when this is complete the bungalow will be replaced with another two storey timber frame and join up.

The reason it is being done this way and not completely demolished is we are living in the bungalow while the work is being carried out. The rear extension is approximately 65 sq. Mts. of blockwork.  The actual extension is larger but we will have a lot of glass areas including a bay area that spans the whole height of the new part.

One thing when measuring up, often any window openings are measured as solid as this compensates for fitting lintels and cutting at the reveals and cill.

If there's LOADS of window area then a compromise would be reached.
