Clear Lacquers for timber (Read 7769 times)

I have been building some new cupboards for my office,they are built from mdf with a oak veneer,I have applied a base coat to gain the colour i require but i have been advised to finish it with a clear lacquer.does anybody out there know where the best place to buy this online

chippy_hammo GDPR opt-out Total Thanks: 58 For This Post: 0	Re: Clear Lacquers for timber Reply #3 - Jul 18^th, 2006, 11:00pm well the base coat is a ronseal oak finish stain.as for why lacquer finish because the man i bought the mdf oak veneer from is a kitchen fitter who builts his own base units and he explained to me how to get a good finish is to apply your base coat then apply about 4 to 5 coats of lacquer to give a hard wareing finish

cheek C/W... lacquer and the V word ARE 2 differing items, contrary to belief and (dictionary) definitions....

how ever one thing with finishes like lacquer, one dent/scratch and you need to do a lot more effort in putting it right... where as a nice oil to bring out the grain (EVEN ON VENEERED MDF) , followed by a few layers of a quality wax will bring it out no end!!!
and protect it so much better!!

but hey ho, each to there own!!!

Both of these will determine what you can use. I Usually go for a water bourne lacquer called Aquacote but something like Dulux Diamondglaze will work as well but not on a waterbased stain. Jason

I'm going to be building something similar later this year from oak veneered mdf. I'll be going with oil and wax as Wolf suggests. Our builder has also recommended some nice engineered oak skinned doors that will get the same treatment. Sample door arrived this week and should look great..
