Wood Cladding Steel Framed Gates
Sep 4th, 2006, 9:31am

My son is intent on getting a steel frame made for the gates he wants at the side of his garage. These will be 2 0ff 5'-0"wide x 6'-0" tall. He then wants to clad the frames with wood boarding (T&G).

Can anyone suggest the best timber for this please.

I have suggested proper wooden gates but but not sure where to try.

quote author=big_all linkwell done on 100 posts Grin Grin Thank you sir.

is the gate frame going to be just a frame or provide full security!!!!!!! Full security I guess - it is to hide/ secure their caravan Embarrassed

is it going to be tubular or flat sections!!!!!! Square section tubing if I remember correctly.
is the face off the gate going to finnish flush and level!!! Not sure what you mean here but I think that the timber will sit onto the frame and not be framed by it - so exposed at the top.
is the cladding cosmestic or required for security!!!!! More for cosmetic and to hide than anything else as I reckon the van will show above.
what is the surrounding fence made from!! [/quote] Wall (8'-0" high) one side and short wall and 6'-0" fence on the outer side.  Post let into ground to carry the gate on the outer side.

ok my thoughts here Grin Grin Grin

you have 3 choices
a steelwork that will support the wooden frame the planks attach to

a steel work you attach battons to for the planks

or a virtualy dead flat steel structure you can affix directly to

the surrounding fence was for ideas of design or even trying to make the gate as invisable as you choose Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

wanted to know if the wood had to be vandal proof or just for cladding and hiding rather than direct security

other things you will have to keep in mind
the gate needs to be desighned  with the cladding in mind

if the gate is ouward opening  you won't be able to fully close the front
the hinges pivots will be exposed and there will be a say 2" or 3"gap as the material in front off the pivot point determins the distance the pivot point will be from the edge when the gates fully open

Many thanks BA I am going to try to convince him to have wooden gates factory made as the cost of frame plus the cladding will exceed that of purpose made timber gates.

Again thanks
