Wooden thread cutting taps

Does anyone have experience of cutting wooden threads with screw boxes??

I got a marples 1" and a sarjent 1 1/2" one off ebay a while back. I havent used the sarjent one yet. The marples cuts "OK" but I think the tap could do with a sharpen to get a cleaner internal thread.
Qusetion is how do you sharpen or hone a tap? Has anyone any useful tips?

i normally use thread chasers, but i think you should be able to hone the taps by using a piece of leather with a honing compond applied to it! (after a light oil is soaked into it first!) then with the tap held in a drill chuck , ease the leather up the face edge of the tap a few times! so basically you are "feeding" the strip up the thread! and then back down the rear face...

Thats what I thought it would involve Wolf, like what you suggested, or a slipstone. I was a bit concerned I could ruin the diameter. The bigger sarjent seems to have hardly been used, I expect it will cut well, but the marples has very slight pitting on some of the curved zig zag teeth, it did a cut but I had some "crumbling" of the thread edges (I used a good piece of stable beech which I believe is the best specis to use for thread cutting)
PS what is a thread chaser?
