Cutting and laying travertine fireplace tiles
Oct 12th, 2006, 10:00pm

I've got a fireplace to lay with travertine tiles.

Do they need a diamond wet tile cutter? What's the best adhesive/grout for a travertine fireplace?

The tiles need to be sealed too, don't they (Lithofin?)?

I'm not a pro/trade...

For underfloor heating you use a flexible adhesive (copes with the thermal expansion) . I guess you would need something similar for a fire.

Yes it will need sealing. I've used Lithofin on a travertine shower tray. Looks ok (slightly waxy feel) but I don't know if that's ok for a fireplace (might be flamable?).

Check teh travertine is suitable for the use, if it's resin filled i'm not sure what level of heat resistance it will have.

Lithofin Stain Stop MN will be fine, the cellulose is only a medium to transfer the waxy impregnator.

Like I say, I'd be more concerned with the stone.

Thanks both.

All done now and looking good.  Cheesy

Went for flexible adhesive and grout with an impregnator in between. Topps Tiles assure me that the tiles will be fine with the fire on top.
