Cupboard doors
Oct 17th, 2006, 8:13pm

At some point in the future I want to cover a 3 meter wide wall with shelves floor to ceiling to build a filing system. I'd like to add doors and a bottom hinged writing surface to hide the lot away. The plan is to use oak veneered mdf or similar for the shelves but what to do about the doors?..

The doors we are using in the rest of the house are these from JBKind...

...

Ideally I'd like to make doors that look like this but are thinner. More like kitchen cupboard doors?

I was thinking of assembling them from 20mm engineered oak flooring ...but the back and edges wouldn't look great. Can you buy oak veneer these days or is it horribly expensive?

Perhaps 14mm engineered oak stuck to oak venered mdf would be better?  Then just veneer the edges? or would that warp as it's unbalanced?

We could be talking about as many as 18 doors so the simpler the better!

I would make, or have made, solid wood doors, unless you can buy them factory made it would be extremely time consuming to try to veneer doors like this and making up doors, part from veneered MDF and engineered boards, would be a lot of work for a very compromised door. Plus the results would not look anything like as effective as ones made from solid timber. Veneered MDF board is OK for shelves and for small panels but even the decent stuff never really looks like the real thing. IMHO

i agree with woodsmith

you cannot add veneer to curves or molding  so unless your  into square edges  its a no go

colour match can be a problem with old and new and manmade and natural Roll Eyes

I would make the doors from 13mm oak veneered MDF then glue 6mm thick strips of solid oak to the face of the MDF. Lip the edges with iron on oak veneer, easy as that.

I've done quite a few like that, here are a couple in maple

...

...

And some in oak

...

...

BTW I've just fitted 10 J B Kind doors for a client, not bad doors.

Jason that sound just the job.  Is there a trick to sticking the 6mm on? Treat it like a veneer and use contact adhesive or PVA and lots of weights?

I us eTitebond II but PVA should be OK just not too much otherwise you will get too much moisture into the timber strips and risk them cupping.

Try clamping two doors face to face while the adhesive sets.
