Have a look at "Building Traditional Kitchen Cabinets" by Jim Tolpin from The Taunton Press it's very good and details face framing clearly.
Unless you want a really traditional kitchen I would go with Jasons advice and use melamine cabinets. You can get flat packed base units for less than £30 at BnQ, and they are not bad quality if you take some care in assembling them.
