unidentified dripping noise
Jan 29th, 2007, 8:19pm

Every morning I hear a dripping noise coming from the bathroom of the flat above mine.  A plumber has been round and taken up the bathroom floor to find nothing.  When checking walls and ceilings nothing is wet.  Does anyone have any ideas of what could be the cause?  Have been hearing the noise for a while and it is beginning to drive me crazy!

Is it a drip or a click, as in a pipe touching the plasterboard for example.

heeelllooo  apple32 and welcome Grin Grin Grin

could be the clicking of expanding and contracting pipes or indeed any metal its usualy somthing like hot water pipes as the temperature changes quicker than say central heating pipes but still applicable to any material [even wood ] but more normal if its a lot of noise to be pipe work

It is definitely a dripping sound - it starts off dripping quickly and then slows down and usually lasts for 20 seconds.

i would suggest that next time you hear the noise you pop upstairs sharpish and ask what they have done over the last few seconds up to the last 10 mins  or what may be operating like central heating 'washing machine 'cooker 'dishwasher

you can of course narrow this down to the area below where you get the noise but don't rule out other equipment or actions as they may be connected[via pipework for example or just manifesting its self in the one area although remote]

ooo and dont rule out noisy doors

and deffinatly dont assume its dripping just because it sounds like it Wink

well it does sound like his hot water pipe expanding or even possibly the drain!!!

if you can gain accsess try sprinkling talk where ever the hot or drain pipe touch any thing else especialy joists or floorboards Roll Eyes

I'll bet you 50 quid it's their shower head dripping its final contents after they have used the shower.  Cool  If he's got a cheap nasty acrylic shower tray it makes it sound very loud from underneath.

Mine first port of call would be the soil pipes is touching something where it exits the flat above and runs through your flat to the drain.

Of course the stack could be outside and we will have to rethink, but my money is on the waste expanding when he pulls the plug.
