Hook / split battens
Apr 5th, 2008, 5:47pm

A method used to give concealed fixing in the like of cabinets and wall panelling.

They are known by various names including Hook / split battens and French cleat. I have always known this type of fixing as a hook or split batten but it as been bought to my attention that’s it’s also called a French cleat.

It’s just another word they don’t know the origin or meaning off. All they know it sounds good and is another word in there arsenal of the bulls brown stuff to give the client to make them sound as if they know what they are doing.

Its also like kitchen fitters having Bespoke Kitchens & Bedrooms on the side of there vans when all they do is buy off the peg units and throw them together. They don’t realise that bespoke means made to an individuals needs from none standard parts or patterns.

The Wolf!!!!!!

How interesting - I first came across this method [of fixing] when as a mere youngster I worked with an aging Chippie who was preparing wall hung display cabinets for a Motor Show and he called them 'Split Battens'.
