PVC or UPVC Box sections
May 13th, 2009, 11:04am

I have a "pergola" on the front of my bungalow, original build, circa 1961. It is timber, approx 150x50 in section and just over 4.6metres long. - it takes the form of a ladder structure. I would like to replace it with UPVC or PVC box section, but the only stuff I have found so far is 50x50 box section - Does anyone know where to find architectural plstics like this?

Google suggested "posts & beams" here..

http://www.casupply.co.uk/acatalog/peak_beams_ridges.html

They also have end caps and post to beam connectors

Better still buy some green oak and do a bit of carpentry? No need for paint or preservative. Just let it go silver over a year or two.

I'm not an experienced wood worker but I'm working a little bit of green oak at the moment. I've got an 18 foot long beam 8"x6" and some posts to go under it. Part of an outbuilding I'm constructing. This is the first time I've worked anything in green oak. It cuts very nicely even with my hand saw from Homebase. Found I could cut ultra thin shavings across the end grain with a chisel when cleaning up the shoulders on tenons. A delight compared to the softwood I've mostly worked with.

But plastic looks so much better, and it can sometimes last for months, if not years before it falls apart!
