Roof tile clips
Dec 8th, 2009, 2:52pm

I've not tiled a roof before but have a pretty good idea of what's involved and have been reading up. One or two guides say the use of tile clips is important on verge tiles even when mortaring them.

I'm using Marley Eternit Ashdown clay tiles but Marley don't seem to mention clips in their fixing guides for clay tiles. Been on the phone to them and they don't make clips for the Ashdown plain clay tiles.

It's a moderately exposed location but not exactly the top of Beachy Head. Are clips used for plain clay tiles or ?

Clips are used for concrete tiles such as Marley moderns, but clay tiles don't have them. I think the small size of tile helps stop the wind getting under them.

When I can I like to use tile and tile and a halfs along the verge, rather than tiles and half tiles, if that makes sense.

Mechanically fix (screw down) all verge tiles and all eaves tiles (bottom two courses).  As has been said, only use full tiles and 'tile & ½' tiles, never halves or cuts on a verge.

Thanks. I have full tiles and "tile and a halfs" and if I've done my sums right no cut tiles will be needed.

The issue is with the standard full tiles. The guides say to cut the batten 100mm short of the verge to keep the end away from the mortar. That means only one screw on a standard full tile. Presumably that's ok?

Any recommendations on screws? Are SS Turbo Ultras ok (countersunk heads) or are there better choices?

I use copper clout nails if the batten is fully fixed and doesn't flex, otherwise stainless screws like the ones you mention. Don't tighten them up too much though!
