Why is my toaster blowing the fuse board
Sep 25th, 2010, 3:22pm

I have a Russell Hobbs toaster, just over a year old and so out of guarantee.  Every time I plug it into any switch, it causes all the electrics to short and I have to press the button on the fuse box which switches everything on again. I am not technical, hubbie has changed the fuse to no avail, what is causing this and do I have to buy a new toaster ?

was it an expensive toaster??

if its relativly cheap then a year is about right
if it was medium price then you would expect it to last a bit longer

sale off goods act
Quote:
   * - The law says that goods that are of satisfactory quality are free from minor defects, have good appearance and finish and are durable, safe and fit for all the purposes for which such goods are commonly supplied.
   *  In addition to being fit for their every day purpose goods should be fit for any specific purpose you agreed with the seller at the time of sale [for example, if you specifically asked for a printer that was compatible with your computer]

If your goods are not satisfactory you may be able to make a claim for up to 6 years in England and Wales and 5 years in Scotland after the purchase of your goods, for a refund, repair or replacement.

phone up the supplier or shop you bought it from and when they say its just out off g/tee just say your not claiming off the g/tee you are expecting a replacement because the sale off goods act say "the toaster must be fit for purpose" as reputable brand at a not so small price you expected at least 3 years before failure so not fit for purpose

they may start saying about indipendant report at your cost this they are entitled to do but you get the money back if its faulty
if they suggest it you may be better getting your own indipendant report

but before any off that unplug turn upside down and see what falls out

Thanks for reply.  It was only £20 but it was a Russell Hobbs so I expected better quality.  I will either take it back to the store or write to RH, now I know where I stand.  thanks again !

you have to keep in mind that if it does need an independant report they aint cheap and it may say the dammage was caused by the use off knifes and forks to remove bread products lol Roll Eyes
but certainly worth progressing through the retailer r/h and consumer direct and maybe call there bluff Grin

The heating element in a toaster is essentially bare wire (which is why putting a knife in to free jammed toast is very dangerous) so any damage or a bit of tin foil going in can easily cause a fault that trips an RCD or blows a fuse.

Have you cleaned the toaster recently? If not then perhaps a bit of toast stuck in there might be sufficient to trip an RCD. If you have cleaned it then perhaps it's still a bit damp in there?
