Fitting a Banjo
Sep 18th, 2010, 6:06pm

Hi,

I just want to ask whether it is ok to fit the banjo to the outside of the IP66 enclosure.  I was hoping to fit it on the inside, but the 25mm->20mm reducer nut means the thread of the gland is no longer long enough so that appears not to be an option.

Thanks

Fitting on the outside is fine as the banjo should be brass. If your using the armouring as the sole (only) earth connection then ensure you get a good tightness on the earth lead.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for confirming.  I have 3 core so the armour is a secondary earth, which I feel should still be earthed to the CU

If you earth it at the CU, there is no real need to earth it the other end too.  Usually for good practice you would, but if this makes it difficult, I would not bother in this case, particularly if it meant compromising the IP rating by drilling a hole for the banjo's nut.

What make enclosure are you terminating into?

I am using Wiska enclosures.

One other question I have which I have seen conflicting information about relates to earthing.

My plan was to run the 45m of 3 core 10mm SWA to the new CU in the garage and to wire the earth core and the armour into the earth terminals of the garage CU and the house CU?

I was also planning on using the earth of the house CU rather than having a new earth rod down at the garage ?

Does this sound ok ?
