Fitting an outdoor tap
Apr 13th, 2011, 1:45pm

Hi,

I've not done a lot of plumbing work before so thought it best to ask this question here!

I have an existing cold water pipe fed outside to an isolating valve (as used with a washing machine etc). I want to use this pipe to feed a new outdoor tap.

Please see the picture of the existing pipe and valve (on the left).

...

Can you please give me some advice on what is needed to convert this to an outdoor tap?

Thanks
Richard

You need a stopcock, draincock, double check valve, hose union bib tap, backplate elbow, and a sleeve on the pipe where it passes through the wall.

Rather than trying to assemble all the bits in situ I would cut the pipe inside to fit a stop cock and remove the bit of pipe you have. Then make up a new length of pipe with the fittings The Scruff mentioned. Feed pipe through sleeve/wall and reconnect to the stopcock on the inside. Downside of this approach is you may have to buy a length of pipe for the few inches needed.

You can get a tap with a built in double check valve..

PS: I think you may also need a bend.
