Oil Pipe Fire Stop Advice
Oct 20th, 2011, 2:11pm

Had or normal boiler service today and was talking to the engineer about the boiler. He pointed out that the fire stop valve is in the wrong place (next to the boiler).

It is a long run of oil pipe in the bungalow so I suspect that someone in the past was lazy when they originally installed the boiler - that or they only had a short fire stop valve on them.

Question is :-

It would be quite difficult to run the capilary along the same route as the oil pipe, but I could quite easily run it up through the loft (bungalow) and down the outside wall. Is it OK to do it that way ? If so I was thinking of getting a new fire stop valve of the right length and running it in place ready to get an engineer in to fit it inline with the oil supply. If so what temp rating would I need to install the bulb end in our Dansmoor 20/25 boiler 65 or 90 degree? Should the capilary run and valve be physically protected in any way ?

Many thanks.

Paul

I assume you are saying the fire valve is in the building near the boiler.

Thats how it was done in years gone by and perfectly ok.

New regs say the valve most be outside the building and the phile over the burner.

Best if you can follow the oil line.

Thanks.

In that case I will wait until we replace the kitchen (the oil pipe run is behind the units on the floor) and then look at running in a new valve at that point.

Any idea what temp I should use ?

I will get our service engineer to fit it at the boiler end and pipe run, but I can save most of the labour by running the capilary / drilling the walls and making good etc.

Fire valve should be 65 or 66 degree depending on manufacturer, this is also stated in your boiler handbook.
Also the rule basically for installing firevalves are the the valve itself should be out side the building before the fuel pipe enters the property, or if the fuel pipe comes out of the floor then it is acceptable to fit at this point.
