Generator to heater hoookup
Feb 8th, 2012, 3:25pm

I have a forced hot air, propane furnace in my house that has its own designated line from the breaker box with a safety shutoff switch next to the heater.  My question is, between the breaker box and switch, can I install a male/female plug(good quality like Bryant), so that in the event of a power outage I can unplug the heater and then plug in an extension cord from my generator to keep heat going.  The safety switch would still be in use, and the generator is rated at 2200 running watts, and the heater would be the only thing on it.  Is this allowed by code and/or is this considered safe.  I do not want to do anything not by code or unsafe.  Thanks for any help.     Garen

Under U.S code (2008) all heating systems, regardless of type have to have a their own dedicated power supply from the breaker box,

providing your generator has some form of breaker box built in it should  be okay, but the best bet is that  you could add a single breaker box (suitably rated) between the NEW plug/socket set and the safety switch , then  just chose the correct Bryant plug/socket set... obviously depending on where (inside or out) the connection will be..you will need to chosse either a  water proof (sheathed set) or  a non sheathed set , (ribbed)... i do know that Bryant do a genterator plug/socket set up...
