Hello all, Hopefully someone will understand.
Sorry if it seems a tad garbled.
This week we had British Gas out to survey for a new boiler. They told us that there is no earth in the property. I was advised to find out if PME was available in the area, it was and they have come out to fit something to the electrical box.
British Gas said it was fine to purchase 10mm earth cable and install it but NOT to connect, bond it or split it.
At the moment I have 2 cables hanging , one is going to be coming from the mains water and the other from the gas pipe.
Do these get connected to the earth bar in the consumer box?
Also is another length of earth cable going to be connected from the earth bar into the PME connection to create earth in the property?
Sorry if its vague.
Long story short...
Conflicting advice from British gas and the PME installer, British gas said there was zero earth and suggested the pme/earth spike... the PME installer said there was earth but not a major amount.
We were basically unsure whether Bgas were using scare tactics to increase work that would be needed. We were planning on replacing the boiler with them and were quoted almost 4000 for the work including the pme/spike install.
The PME installer said that British Gas were scaremongering every one of their boilercare customers and the rise in pme installing had increased over 80%. We have been in the property over 15 yrs without any issues, we may have just been lucky so far.
Hope someone can clear a few things up as I dont want to waste money on work/electricians that may not have been required.
thanks
