Installing a ceiling light with multiple wires
Jul 23rd, 2013, 4:46pm

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to instal a ceiling light fixture in my condo, but the wiring in the ceiling electrical box is very confusing. I expected to find one black wire, one white wire and the ground wire. However, what I found was a whole bundle of wires. Most visibly there were 3 black wires bundled together, 3 white wires bundled, a group of green wires bundled, as well as a red and a blue; and a whole bunch more tucked in the very back.
Here is a photo of that electrical box:

...

The ceiling fixture should be controlled by a switch on the wall. If it makes any difference there is another ceiling light near by in the hallway. The light I'm trying to instal only has one black, one white and one ground wire. The building is also fairly new (2 years) and the ceiling electrical box was previously just capped off, no lighting fixture was hanging there previously.

I'd appreciate any help on how to go about attaching this light fixture! Do I attach each wire to the bundle or to individual wires? If anyone can help out I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

It doesn't look UK.

Looks US?  Neutrals are usually grey or white, the live being black, or other colours.  Doesn't really help, as you have several combinations there.

You really need an electrician to work out which is which.
