Replace the curly brackets with square brackets below:

{IMG}http://www.mywebsite.co.uk/image.gif{/IMG};

Between the IMG open and close tags you put the URL of the image. It must be available on the Internet.

Cheers Andrew - will this put in the actual image, or a hyperlink to it?

It will provide a hyperlink to the image, and show it in the message. For example my banner at the bottom of each of my posts is such an image reference, but the image is actually on my web site (not on this server).

So if you remove the image from the web site where it has been uploaded, any further references to that image will fail and you'll be presented with a broken image placeholder - even if the image showed okay before you removed it.
