anybody got any idea how i can host an irc server?
i have linux and if i dig around i have unrealircd somewhere too, i have no idea about hosting though, also any idea how to host a site on my own server? if i have a domain and website is it possible to host it off my own PC and how would i get DNS to work etc? any links appreciated.  thanks

[edit] host a server on a network that is, or if i have my own domain could i create an IRC network? Failing that, anyone run a server and want a new oper? lol

Presume you're on ADSL? Find a friendly ISP who will hold the A recs for you pointing to your IP. I do that with a bunch of names all pointing to my one IP and then hostname headers off to 5 virtual web servers and a handful of e-mail domains too...

Or host your own DNS and get the company that you got the domain from to point it to your NS.

Then you basically run whatever services you need to.

But do check your ADSL T&C's! Business ones tend to be open but some domestic ones state no services.

I recently set up an account with ThatIP.com - http://www.thatip.com.

They host your DNS. You run a little proggy on your server which monitors your local ADSL IP address, and if it changes it advises the ThatIP DNS server and you get connected again.

Works for me. I currently have half a dozen live domains on my Windows 2000 server under my desk here, including my HandyMac domain.

I set the TTL to 2 minutes on the domains I'm hosting here. I could have made it 1 minute, but the problem with having a low TTL is that the DNS servers around the world will keep checking the IP address more frequently. I can live with 2 minutes downtime.

My IP address seems to be almost static. I've known it change after NTL have restarted their proxy server, but other than that it seems pretty constant.

or leave the big 4 and use an unreal server which auto masks your IP anyhow, only opers can get it then, unless you manually(or script) unmask

yes but teasing opers is fun

also fun is ircplus which doesn't do a double reverse so if you have control over your reverse zone you can use any hostname you like.

find a provider that gives it to you

most dedicated server providers give you some form of control over your rdns but some force you to go through a crappy interface of thiers rather than giving you direct control.

there are also slight complications if you have less than 256 ips due to the way rdns works.
