Turns out its called a
LOOP ALARM
basically a wire loop with 2 plugs that connect together break the loop and the alarm goes off.
so they set up a display of hire products etc loop this wire round each item and plug together and turn alarm on. to take any item you would have to break the loop thus setting off alarm.
had to order it

You can use any intruder alarm for them - we fitted a similar system in a surf shop - 8 zone panel.
