Can't say I blame you, always feels better to have control etc.
However at Xmas I decided I wouldn't renew my reseller account (I didn't), so I moved the domains I look after for other small businesses to the server under my desk here. Immediately ran into some problems which I hadn't expected, so I signed up for an ISP arrangement where I can host up to 10 domains for £130 per year. I'm only using 4 of those presently
I found it wasn't worth the effort of trying to maintain my own server. If the server goes bang I would immediately be faced with very expensive repairs which I can't afford. If the NTL line disappears (it does occasionally) I have customers whose web sites aren't available. And if content were to appear on their domains which I hadn't authored (because someone had managed to break the security on my server) I could be held liable for having the server under my control.
At the end of the day the decision to pay the ISP was easy, and anyone visiting the web sites gets full-on bandwidth which would never have been possible on a broadband connection. Add the extra cost of hardware etc and the sums didn't add up. At least with an ISP I have a guarantee of a backup server which will be brought online should the main server go pop.
I still run one web site on my server though:
http://www.bflc.org.uk'cos I'm kind like that
