He must have been winding you up, or he was a plumber or a chippie, and therefore hard-of-thinking. A kettle is one thing - it's just a heating element, and I can believe that it would work, albeit a lot slower, on 110V (BTW - as for the autostop system, that's triggered by the steam, so if it boils, it will switch off).
But tools with motors - just can't see how they will work anywhere near well enough on 110V....
