How does everyone connect theirs?

Sharing the voice line, own line, via a faxswitch, via BT Call Sign? ? ?

I had BT Homehighway before broadband, and this gave me two 'PSTN' phone numbers and lines, I used one for voice, one for fax.

I then changed to broadbancd, and lost the second line, but had the number moved to Call Sign.

BUT the bloody fax still picks up from time to time on the voice number.

Have ordered a second line for the fax, another monthly bill.

How do others run their faxes?

From the Mac. Alt-print-send. I don't want their spam so no probs incoming, as only connect when folks call to say it's on the way. everyting else is e-mail (read-only PDF if quote) or post.

Never bothered with one when set-up and haven't seen the need yet. How much use does yours' get?.

I used to run a Fax modem on my PC, but gave it up. Glad I did too.

Viruses and trojans frequently do the rounds these days which cause your PC to dial an expensive number. My AV has caught a few of those trying to get in during recent weeks, but as the PC doesn't have a modem connected to the outside world it wouldn't have been able to cause me a problem anyway.

The damage can run into hundreds of pounds if you aren't careful, and you only find out about it some time after the event when the phone bill arrives.

I had a £200 trojan bill  Embarrassed

I had broadband, but I left the old modem connected for some silly reason.

I use the fax for quotes from the wholesalers and suppliers mainly, it does get used a lot.

I have 2 phone lines, one for phone calls in and out, the other line is my adsl plus dedicated fax line.

I have a phone connected to the dedicated fax line so I can call out without blocking the incoming phone line.

You can't phone in on the fax line, it is set to receive faxes only.

nah! can't be that simple.  Anything to do with computers usually requires a visit to the bios, regedit, system tools, dos, reboots and frustration  Cry

the pc modem is not connected to anything outside the pc - is this enough?  my adsl router is connected however, is this not a possible security weakness ?

disconnecting your old pc modem from the telephone line will stop the trojan phone calls...

your router beign connected is a security weakness, however if it has its own frimware firewall, and you have good antivir/firewall/TrojanDetectors you'll be ok.  And lets face it, how else are you gonna conenct to the net without it being hooked up... lol
