SWA Cable, new and old colours
Jun 28th, 2005, 2:39pm

Hi guys, just purchased some new swa cable because in need of extending a run from the house to a garden shed, all is well except the new harmonised colors, old cable has got RED(LIVE),YELLOW(EARTH) & BLUE(NEUTRAL), all very simple i thought but the new swa cable has a light grey, black & brown core, which connects to which?????????????
Cheers in advance

R,Y,Bl,Bk go to Br,Bk,Gy,Bl. Best to mark up the old run ends with the necessary markings.

If it's 3 phase the L1,L2,L3 &N
If just 3 core for single phase then use Brown to mark the live and blue to mark up the Neutral on the old cable to save confusion. the Black is now normally sleeved as G/Y and used for earth in a single.

brown should be used for live in a single phase setup but there is some dispute over which way round to use black and grey for neutral and earth.

whichever you do make sure you sleeve it appropriately.

Well what the NIC decided made seemed like the first bit of common sense from them and made sense to me, use black as earth instead of grey

As Black is now a live - it does seem sensible not to use it as a neutral.

I think we need to sing from the same hymn sheet, so to speak - so I will stick to grey=N and black=E.  If everyone does the same, all is sweet!

The production of a single phase 3 core SWA would seem like a natural progression - I fear cost will prevent this, but we can only hope.  (Brown, Blue & GreenYellow)  But then, with this floating around, how many people will bung it in and use the cores (including GY) for another purpose such as a switch drop or a 3 phase supply  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked    I can see it now - ah look we have a little left over.........lets use it for this machine......

That was kind of my point - The amount of sales will not warrent production for stock, and so the cost will be more.
