Fixed custom head board
Oct 18th, 2005, 2:44pm

I want to make a fixed headboard which will just mount on to the wall above the bed!

Any tips on this, as i am just going to make the frame and add foam and cover!

Also i want to be able to hook the headboard on to the wall with hidden fixings, what are the name of those fixing, like a slot fixing?

Thanks

if the "wood" is fully coverd by material  use mdf as plywood edges can splinter

and these are the easiest to use [screwfix 11423 incase the link fails]
https://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?ts=45542&id=11423

or these but not easy to locate them home on a big area
http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/sea/searchresults.jsp;jsessionid=OJ3VCKQAGW4FHCJ...
although you can make a feature of these and they can be seen

Good tip about the splinters too!

Just a though, i was going to make a frame, about 1" x 1" then cover with a thin sheet of mdf, is there a better way?

If you are wrapping the fabric around the headboard then the softwood frame will be easier to staple the material to than solid MDF.

Ahh, so just one sheet of mdf will be ok, yes i guess so! but as Jason said, it maybe a bit hard to staple to!

Nothing will be shown, as the fabric will be covering it all!

I would like the foam to be actually around the edges aswell, so no hard areas, but if i use one flat peice, it may bulge in odd places, is there anyway to overcome this? or will the pressure of the board being fixed hide the buldges?

I've made something similar although it was a padded seat top for a waiting room. Used MDF + foam + material + staples. Two tricky bits...

1) Getting the corners to look right - Unless you make beds for a living its hard working out how to wrap 2D material around a 3D form and have it look neat. Might be easier with big round corners? Try some experiments with scrap material before doing it for real.

2) Getting the weave of the material straight. Don't try covering it with material with a striped pattern! It's difficult to pull the material tight without the stripes going wavy. Best pick a plain material with no visible weave.

I forgot my top tip... use the wifes electric carving knife to cut the foam..but don't tell her I told you.

When I made a headboard recently,I cut the foam with a sharp machete - worked a treat, nice and easy to cut straight (but possibly another thing you shouldn't do in public.. Wink)

And no,I don't get invited out very often  Grin Grin

round over the edges of the frame at the front,at least witha 3/8 round over bit!! this will allow the material to "run" with the curve easier, and will also help to reduce the "sharp" edges of the headboard!!

As well as Wolf's tip which is a must, try and get some interlining and cover the frame with it first. It's the only way to get a perfect finish.

Super stuff guyz, thanks for all the tips!

Curving the edges is a definate yes, and the material is is going to be plain! i have recoverd a few kitchen chairs in my time and some were a tarten pattern, took ages to get it right! Also i have framed up canvas picture's a few times, so i know the tricky coners can be a nightmare!

Just a few questions - what is interlining? and what foam thickness do you reccomend?
Cheers

The foam is a dificult question because I don't know exactly what sort of effect you plan, my advice is to use it reasonably thin about 2 inch max.

Interlining is a thick wool/ felt used to insulate curtains, it goes between the fabric and the lining, hence interlining; it is sometimes known as "bump". You can get it from any good curtain shop and is ideal if you want a relatively plain finish. If you plan to have a lot of detail by fitting loads of buttons etc you may be better off with a heavy calico. Either way they both go over the top of the foam btw Wink

Hope this makes sense

Yes clear as crystal KeIth!

so does the interlining go between the foam and my fabric?

2" should it i guess, it's only to have a warmish surface to sit against, rather then the cold wall! and also will help my 1 year old headbutting the wall and making a mess of the plaster Smiley

Yes, make up the headboard completely, fixing the interlining or calico in place so that the headboard looks finished; but "in the white". Then fix your finishing fabric over that.
