Wood for windows
Nov 27th, 2005, 3:54pm

I'm about to get quotes for some windows that use a metal clad wood section (metal outside, wood inside). The manufacturer offers various woods..

"Standard:
Pine or Meranti (stained in various shades)

High grade:
Ash, Beech, Mahogany,
Maple (European)
Cherry (European),  Hard Maple (Canadian)
Black Cherry, Pear or Swiss Pear"

Do any of these have particular advantages/disadvantages apart from offering a better  appearance?  Do any discourage rot/mold? Not take wood stains/paint well? React with metal? etc

Thanks

All the woods you list are classed as perishable/non-durable with the following exceptions:

Meranti & cherry are moderatly durable
Mahogany is durable.

I assume that they come prefinished as meranti is not one of the easiest woods to paint but I would have thought that with the exception of pine you would be going for a clear finish to take advantage of the wood.
