Why Oh Why?
Dec 25th, 2005, 1:54pm

Christmas, a time for finding things to do.

My project for the day was simple, sort the kids toys out then get the wireless network up and running. Should have known better, wish I was still at work, at least I wouldn't be trying to find things to do at home that make me want to throw the laptop through the frigging tree.

Get it working as a wired network first.

It is, and has been working as such for several years!

It sort of works now, think I might get a new card for the laptop, it appears to be........... well, crap. Smiley

I'm after a mini-PCI card though, probably just go for a Toshiba one, seem to be the norm for mini-PCI WLAN cards from what I've seen so far.

I can have it working if I'm about 2 metres from the AP, it drops out every few minutes though and enabling security makes it worse. Security on this b card only works on 64 bit, the PDA won't work on WiFi with any security enabled at all.

If I take the laptop upstairs it reports good-excellent signal strength and Windows retains it's DHCP assigned IP address, but won't do anything (ping, tracert etc..). Plugging in the wired network brings that interface up and the laptop picks up another IP address from the DHCP pool but everything still goes over the WiFi link so nothing works, the only way to get it to work is to disable the wireless network. It never used to do this. Roll Eyes

Time for some new AP's as well I think, (and I'm also on the lookout for some rack mount server cases).

I have a netgear DG834g, currently only with my wired PC on it.

I was thining of getting a second hand laptop, and putting a wireless card in......beginning to think it is more trouble that it's worth - everyone I know says signal drops off too easily?

Depends what card and how far yu want it to go. I've set up Netgear DG834G's for people with wireless links across the house.

I think my trouble is the cards in the laptop and PDA. I'm currently scouring eBay for some decent AP's (like Cisco decnt Smiley ) and some servers.

I am also interested in looking into getting a server running.  Would save me some money on hosting, and give me something to play with Grin

No idea where to start - want to keep it seperate from my current PC though.

Once running a server, does it need a screen/keyboard??  I assume it can be operated from another machine on the network??

Yeah, my servers are all sat in the garage and are administered via remote desktop apps. (Just downloaded B02K from Sourceforge, new one to try).

As for web servers, I'd definitely run it on a seperate PC. I'm just about to dust off a spare PIII 750 I've got and shove a 160GB drive in it. I've got SuSE Linux to put on it and then set up Samba and sort out the network\domain logons. Then, once that's done, there will be another spare PC that appears after a tidy up so that will become a webserver running Apache.

All this will sit in the garage next to the IPCop firewall, (might need to build a bigger shelf, only enough room on the existing one for another 1 PC).

Simple, that's my day sorted.

What about these 'out of the box' servers which seem to be just a 'box' with a mains lead and a LAN connection !?!  Guess they would be slow, and not very upgradeable.

Can't say I've ever seen a cheap and affordable out of the box web server. Which one's have you seen?

There is a simple project called Xerver which will run on Windows or Linux and is meant to be pretty striaght forward. Personally, I'd spend a bit more time getting it running on Linux so it doesn't fall over every half hour!

Can't remember the name now - I have seen a bloke using one for sharing his work files between offices.

It was like one of the external hard drives you can get, that connect to your LAN, but I assume must also have a precessor of somesort in it, as it was running linux.  He just used to leave this on all the time, and used it to grab files.  Cost around £300 I think, but is a real space saver......

You don't get something for nothing though, and being so small, I can't believe it would be too impressive - maybe ok for text documents etc.

Iv'e never seen one since, and just wondered if you had.

Could have just been a snap server accessable through a seperate VPN.

Cost wise, for hosting your own website, all you need is a PII and up PC with a suitable Linux distro and Apache on it. You could get a decent Dell server from eBay for a couple of hundred and the Linux and Apache are FOC.

What, for you?  It'd do the job I suppose, I wouldn't discount the idea. I'm just one for over complicating things. Also, I've got a PC, SuSE and Apache all here so I don't need to spend any money. Smiley

I thought this was similar to what the chap I know has??  No idea on speed or anything though...just a cheap, simple play toy really Grin

I would prefer something beefing, with lots of lights, and big numbers Grin  Grin

Maybe worth a play though...

What about your internet connection speed? If it's ADSL then the upload direction can be 10x slower than the download direction.  The upload direction might only be 256Kbit and that would be shared between those viewing your site. Might be a bit slow at times?

Thought about that, not really a high traffic site, mainly want to set up 3 domains that I use primarily for email, one jst happens to be for the business with some pages on it too. I am thinking about spending the money saved on hosting on a decent SDSL connection instead, one day.
