21st century wood
Feb 23rd, 2006, 2:03pm

ok i mean mdf really, i have a question. Shocked

I have these bullnose things to fit at the MIL's, they come with their own mdf clippy thing, supposed to clip into the laminate flooring. but its a different make and doesnt clip, it's also too thick.....

so, how can I take about 2mm off it, can mdf be planed? would a merchants take it down for me, or should i convince the missus that i need a thicknesser?

i dont really want to chip away at the f***ers with a stanley, especially since i need 4 stair widths of the buggers.

Btk are you talking about quadrant strip to go round the edge Undecided

Mdf is made in layers if you are lucky and the grain is running right you could almost just peel it off other wise you can plane it, but it is dusty and is very abrasive on the tools.

I don't run it through the thicknesser for that reason, amongst others.

Yes you can Plane MDF...(but watch out for the Formalda.....ONLY KIDDING SCRIT!!!!)  all you need to think about is that you take off thin shavings with it!, as if you go too agressive, you can remove WAY to much!!!!

But still argue the case for a thicknesser!, i hear WS has one that needs a home!! (sorry WS!!)

and just what is wrong with Whittling the things down!!

if you try and put it through a thicknesser its just as likely to rotate as the point of contact is so small

you may get round this by cutting a v groove in a bit of 2by 1!

or even holding firmly to the molding and putting slight possative rotational pressure to hold it flat Roll Eyes

normal quad is slightly more than 90%

its not quadrant moulding its more like a proper floorboard, made of mdf and with a click edge instead of a tongue. it's slightly thicker than the laminate flooring(inc underlay)

yeah, it goes at the edge of the stair, then a metal square-bullnose clips over it, i am using it where it's supposed to be used, but not with the same manufacturer its intended to be used at.

Because its at the stair I want it dead flush, its only a couple of mm but I would feel terrible if it caused a fall for the MIL. (or a skinned toe for that matter).

I intend to get the thickness sorted on it, then countersink and screw the stuff to the edge of the landing, with the metal bit clipped over that, its a tight fit so will be no hazard. just need to get the mdf thinner.

I could go and get some timber machined, but it wouldnt have the profile this stuff has.

I'll post a pic of it...

theres a tongue on the metal bullnose that slips in there(with some persuasion), that holds it in place.

i am thinking not, as long as i leave the front thickness(left side in the pic) it should be tight, i want to take the 2mm or so(whatever thickness it is) off the bottom...

which brings me back to my tooling question...

Won't you lose part of the locking joint if you cut some off the bottom?

i was actualy thinking perhaps the reason they dont fit together is because the 2mm extra thickness is likely to be spread over the whole thickness off the board so your tounges are likely to be about 0.5mm to 1mm bigger as a proportion so you may get delamination if you try and force the tounge in Shocked
