Fixing a gate
Jul 22nd, 2006, 8:39am

Hi, I've got a heavy iron gate which has a hinge which has come out of its brick/mortar surround.

I want to remortar the hinge area but should I do this, wait for it to go off and then drill, plug and screw the hinge back in or should I try to set the hinge screws in the mortar as it sets?

Also, what mix of sand/cement is best for this sort of job?

I would  re-mortar it, give it a week to dry properly and then redrill and fix

I would also be looking to see if I could strengthen the area and spread the load

As it has already failed it will be likely to fail again

Thanks for the advice Stair.  Smiley

I've actually replaced the offending brick and will drill and fix in a week or so.

Cheers.

basicly looks like a metal bar 12mm x about 30mm wide and  with a pin to hang the gate on one end and a block on the other to stop it pulling through the cement layer its set in
