How to construct a wooden ladder
Dec 26th, 2007, 1:16pm

Hi all, hoping someone can help. I am ok at basic carpentry but would like to construct a small ladder.
It is to take out to a holiday villa for use around the house.
Ideally I want to build this out of wood and have it sectional (about 3 feet each section. Ideally i want to flat pack it out to there and assembly on site.
The reason for having sectional (apart from transporting it) is that I will need to change the bottom section ocassionaly for different jobs and I can also take out a section at a time, and also better for storage out there. Its to Turkey and although I could get an aluminium one out there they are costly and I have no where to store it, so smaller sections are ideal.
ie
one is on an angle where one leg would be longer than the other.
I would probably have a max of 3 sections around 9 feet in total height.

Can anyone guide me on a safe way to construct this.
Any help would be great.

not realy a practical idea as the weight on a ladder is not only down the leg  but also your weight pushing the ladder back so your sections need to overlap by 2 rungs or so to give the strength so wood not a good option

you cant just stack one on top of the other as there will be no stability

have you thought about a combination ladder!!!

http://www.laddersalesdirect.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=97_132&products_id=347...

you could also build some stacking boxes from 18mm ply 2ft square by 18" deep

also if you want to pad out a step to keep a ladder level on stairs it needs to cover 2 steps  [upside down L shape]for stability with the weight of the ladder central on the platform
with either heigh grip base or mechanicly fixed to the step

you can also get survayors  ladders that are telescopic or 3ft clip together but are only desighned for light use like entry or decorating

Thanks for the reply big-all.
I checked your options but not really what I am looking for, better than having no ladder at all but not flexible enough for the purpose (ocassional light use use around house) also transport problem to get them out there.
back to the drawing board I guess.
