cutting out a piece of skirting
Feb 25th, 2008, 9:58am

I have a piece of damaged skirting in the corner of the room that needs cutting out, easy enough take off and cut, however the length of skirting goes behind a radiator and not easy to get the length off the wall.
Is there a way to cut out a section (about 6 inches) while still attached to the wall?
I need to be fairly accurate from a cosmetic point of view as I will be replacing the piece I cut out.

thanks

heeellllooo juco several ways to do this none realy easy Roll Eyes

assuming you dont have a recip saw or a jigsaw

ease the board off the wall place batton between the wall and the back of the skirting

if possible lift a bit clear off floor with a bit off wood

use a saw where the teeth are as far forward as possible

now heres the difficult bit Undecided

to do a propper job you need to angle back your cut around 45 degrees to tie the edges together
from the main veiwing point of the room you shouldnt see along the cut you should see more accross the cut

i should at this point out your skirting needs to be parralel to the wall to allow a right angled strait cut

get yourself a piece of wood the hieght of the skirting and at least 3"wide  the end of your new skirting will do fine angle back at 45 degrees

screw this to the skirting use this too guide the blade of the saw taking care to get as close to the floor as possible without marking it use a bit of card to help you banging into the floor  but needs to be as thin as possible to cut the most skirting

use the cut off floorboard to set the mitre saw to the nearest angle to the one youve cut

Would a Fein Multimaster help here?  Super narrow cut allied with the jig suggested. Expensive solution however.

Indeed...a Fein Multimaster was built for this job. Best tool I ever bought and worth every penny.

Ok I get the drift of it. I have managed to flex out abou 1.5 inches from the wall and height clearance of around half inch from the floor. Would a tenon saw be ok to try and tackle this?

Absolutely, the perfect excuse to buy another tool. I wish I had this problem.

My second favourite country! Now if your in the Highlands or Isle of Skye (which is THE most wonderful place on this planet) I could be very tempted to bring the Fein up their, a wee dram would help us get the job done.  Wink

Aye if you were up here in the next 2 weeks I would buy you a bottle of the stuff and provide accomodation (for sobering up), or we could try and finish a bottle each.  Oooooo a long time since I managed that....and survived!

Skye IS a wonderful place, the last time I was there was before I sold all my motorbikes and we toured Skye and a couple of other islands on the bikes.....a bikers dream.
