Wallpaper and coving
Mar 25th, 2009, 6:27pm

The missus has wanted the spare room decorated for a while.  I have given in and said we can paint it.

On looking closer, it has this shocking polestyrene coving which looks really naff and wants to come down.

Trouble is, the embossed 'woodchip' type paper has been papered on after the coving.

If I remove this coving I will be left with an inch and a half of bare plaster.  I wont be able to find a matching paper to fill this, and if I could I reckon you would still see a line.

If I get some standard coving (have fitted this a few times before) am I going to run into issues if I keep the paper up and allow the coving to stick to the paper?

The new coving would be the standard stuff and would likely overlap the paper by 3/4 inch or so - not ideal I know.  I am guessing with enough adhesive on the top and some good splodges in the cavity it should be ok???

How about a painted ceiling?  Can coving be stuck directly to this?

This job looks to be getting expensive and time consuming!  Thought it was just some paint!

Everytime I remove paper in this house I loose all the paint underneath in large scabs back to the plaster!  I would never get a good paint finish on that without a HUGE amount of work!

Would I??

I've just had the same sort of problem with the paint peeling off in big patches round a window I have replaced. It's out with the Polyfilla and sand it smooth when it's set.

Big job for you though if it's all the walls.

If you've got lots of filling to do, get a tub of ready mixed Gyproc Joint Cement (12itresl!!!), it works out cheap as chips & will last you ferever. It is also smooth, unlike Polyfilla.

Rip it all off then get a plasterer in to give it a quick skim coat. Much easier than faffing about with Polyfilla.  Maybe he needs some wiring done so you could swap trades?

Thats what I want to do - Not sure if I can stick the coving to the paper though.

It's a bit of a bodge. How about offering the coving up, drawing a line on the wall, scoring with a Stanley and removing the paper just under the coving?

Yea, I was thinking that, but you always know when putting coving up that because the walls and ceilings are never straight you can never guarantee where the coving will sit - I could end up with a gap.  How noticeable I dont know!

That's what I would do, then out with the 'painters mate.'
