PS3 Help

Hi folks,
I've just bought a PS3 and will be getting broadband (from Plusnet) in the next few days.
My laptop has died and i'm wondering if:

1.Can i just install the wireless router, plug in the PS3 and go online or do i need a PC/laptop to carry out any registration beforehand???

2. The router is a Sky broadband router that i "forget to return", will this work or is it best to pick up a new router??

If it is a wireless router you would also want to secure these settings through a computer.

I'd be surprised if Sony require you to have a PC to get it online but I don't know for sure. I'd try it with the Sky router and see what happens.

If it was my router it wouldn't work because I have the security turned up to stop the neighbours just logging in and exploring my network. I guess it depends how the sky one is set up out of the box. Where we used to live on a small rural housing estate I could see three wireless networks that were all totally wide open and it would have been dead easy to connect to their router.

Yes they do. Trouble is that if you have a new service provider and an old router set up for an old provider, you will need to adjust the settings of the router to get you connected to the internet. Whether or not the web browser on the PS3 will be compatible (not a Windows based operating system) with the router set-up thing is another story.
They have the option of either using wired or wireless connection to the net

Changing the ISP setting isn't normally hard. Normally you just type 192.168.1.1 into the browser and up comes the router admin log in page. Then you can navigate around the router config and change the ISP log in details to the new one, reboot and it connects to the internet. I guess Sky might turn up the security or lock down the ISP setting in the router to prevent you reconfiguring it but worth a try.

Sky netgear router has sky firmware.

You can flash the firmware with true netgear firmware with relative ease.

Default netgear DG type routers user is "admin" and password is "password", the routers default IP is 192.168.0.1

I believe the sky firmware changes the password though. The router is also already pre-filled with your sky details for DSL connection.

I would reflash the firmware if it was me. Or flog the router on ebay.

When I access one of the two (neighbouring) open wireless networks that come up on my notebook I can usually get about ten minutes out of them before they shut down. Do "they" know their network is being accessed by me and shutting down because of that?

It's possible but normally if they are clever enough to detect you they are clever enough to secure their wireless LAN.

It's possible they have a wireless access point and are using a desktop PC to share there internet connection (daft idea as routers are cheap but not as cheap as an access point). If they turn off their PC it will break your connection.

Many folk also turn off their router along with the PC - Something I hate folk doing, but many do.

Many wireless routers come with no security enabled to allow laptop users to easily configure the router without cables. More recent routers do have the security enabled these days out of the box, with some makes having a different password/WEP/WPA per box.

I suspect in most cases it is, in my experiance router setup interfaces don't tend to do anything too fancy.
