I'm new to this woodworking lark (found I like it 40 years too late) and I am contemplating building a simple garden shed of about 8' X 4'. Any pitfalls I should look out for? Does the angle of the roof rafters have to be a particular angle?. Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks. Terry.

you can actualy ediit your own post ---------------------------------/\up here/\

any way i am building my own shed [workshop] and suspect if you swop the the 3by2 sawn timber for 2by1 sawn timber at perhaps 18" centres and the 18mm ply for 12mm ply for the roof
other things to keep in mind the length of materials 2.4isnt 8ft its an inch and a half short so if you make your floor out of 8 by 4ft sheets and your cladding is 2.4 long youll need to reduce your base dy 40mm or so working on the principle youve got 2by1 treated on the corners to protect the end grain of your cladding

nah wouldn worry to much my pitch is about 18% or there about
i decided the pitch by deciding i had a ten foot span and to be ecenomical with the boards i would cut them down to 6ft to pad the floor out to 10ft with an overhang of 6 inches is it gave me the pitch without cutting the boards about a 24" rise over 10ft width just happend to be verry similar to my origional as it happens 8 by six shed
just draw a line on the patio 6ft wide take two battons about 5ft make shure the meet centuraly above the line decide if five inches is enough overlap then ajust the angle off your battons till you have enough enough angle and overlap at 4ft wide
or alternativly get or order 5by 10ft sheets from your timber yard then you will definatly have as much pitch and overhang as you want
with two sheet of exterior ply

Yep
I built an 8'x6' shed years ago but it was too small to do anything but store garden tools.
After pulling it down after many years of it rotting away I put up a 20'x10' garage which doubles as both workshop and garden tool store.
Those blasted garden tools get in the way too much so I will be making a shed for themselves so they dont keep nagging me to mow the lawn, prune the trees and shred the prunings etc.
No matter how large a workshop you have there is one constant rule.
You always manage to fill it with more tools so run out of space.
Welcome to the woodwork lark.
Keep it up long enough and you will have danish oil running through your viens. Wink

You should be ok if you aren't in a conservation area and your shed isn't close to the house next door.

I want to put a shed at the bottom of the garden so I wrote to the council to ask if I need permission, trouble is my house is listed so I always have to ask.

I kept well within the rules with size etc. Now they have written; I don't need Listed Building consent but I need full planning permission because the house is listed Undecided

Five lots of plans, sample materials and £135, to put up a shed Angry

And it will take up to 12 weeks, I'm not very happy and might not bother.

You could always do what my grandparents next door neighbour did many years ago Keith.
He wanted a small wooden shed to store his gardening tools in plus a small bench with a vice to do a little woodwork.
In those days you needed planning permission for anything you did.
He was refused so put the shed up anyway and applied retrospectively.
They turned him down again.
He then nailed small wooden wheels on each corner and said it was a temporary building as it was mobile.
As anyone else could keep a caravan on their drive ready for holidays his shed counted the same so the council were powerless to make him remove it.

Dewy I am way ahead of you, when I got the letter from the council I was a little peeeeved and gave them a call.

Told them I would put wheels on it and move it round the garden, but it would appear that is not allowed either. We have very restictive covenants which I am already breaking by using the stables as a workshop and parking a comercial vehicle on the property Shocked

.

Not too wise to upset them even more than I already have.
