Removing a large mirror
Sep 26th, 2005, 1:20pm

Hello everyone.

In the house we bought last year there is a large mirror (2 meters high, 1 meter wide) on the wall directly above the staircase. We want to take this down, but we are not sure how to. There is wooden architrave screwed to the wall around the edges of the whole mirror but we are not sure if the mirror is also glued to the wall.

We want to avoid random or uncontrolled breakage for safety reasons, and we want few or no splinters of glass flying around because we have small children who might get injured later.

Any ideas how to get this mirror down without employing a glazier (we have no spare cash for that).

Thanks.

Firstly i would apply tape to cover the mirror surface  this will help prevent it from shattering and sending shards of glass everywhere.

Then remove the top piece of architrave to see if you can work out if it is stuck or just held in place with the architrave.
I would be surprised if it wasn't stuck.  Shocked

If it is stuck then it will probably be a pig to get it off the wall and very unlikely that it will come off in one piece. Sad

What kind of wall is it attached to?? i.e. brick or stud wall??

If it's on a stud wall and it's stuck then you could cut out the plasterboard around the mirror and lift it off in 1 piece with the mirror still attached.

Most importantly though is safety ....make sure you wear heavy duty leather gloves and safety goggles Wink

spot on as chaddy says  Grin
although could it be an old mirror as in when you loosen the whole frame it comes off the wall complete with mirror as in like a picture!!!!!!

i would also if the moulding come of easily
as well as the top piece take off one of the sides and with non slip gloves on slide the mirror sideways untill you can lean it forward enough to get your fingers in behind to hold it
but be carefull it could be heavy!!!!

Thanks chaps.

It's actually in the "well head" I think it's called. That's the vertical wall you look at when you stand at the top of the stairs looking down. That means it's butt up to two walls left and right and also the ceiling at the top.

No chance to get to the sides or top.

mmmm
you may have to use or rig up a platform if theres no
room above the mirror to rest a ladder on!!!!!!!

try carefully loosening the bottom screws a turn or two to try and workout wether its a solid frame or seperate battons

try and see if the glass will slide out if it wont replace the bottom batton incase the mirror works its way out when your backs turned Shocked

leaving the bottom batton firmly secured remove the top then sides then lift out

alternativley if its a mirror in a frame get a bit of 12mm board or two bits of wood going from a step leaning slightly forward onto the wall and wedged up under the frame to support it and give you a surface to carefully slide it down to step level

If it's not glued to the wall that's fine.

Any tips on tackling it if it turns out to be glued to the wall as well?

i would wait and see
as the only access to the mirror is immediatly below it if its glued on i cant see an easy way out

ive got a 2m steel rule that i would use but only from the top or the side at arms length  NOT from underneath
