the problem with a lot of the photo printers is that the software they provide to manage / maipulate / print the images depends on a usb connection.

That's the thing, I don't use any of the bundled software for printers. I use PSP or Fireworks for editing stuff then just print it to a printer without loads of crappy software needed.
