trestles to use as desk legs ?
Jan 8th, 2006, 4:17pm

Hi
I have a good sized length of beech worktop left over from our kitchen.  I am thinking of using it as a desk by putting a couple of trestles under it as legs.

I have had a quick look around for a 'stylish' trestle, but I'm not sure of what brands exist and how robust they are.  Im thinking of this one

Anyone suggest something better ?

Hi Mark

The only downside to a triangular trestle is that it robs you of a lot of floor space. Have you thought about making a base from three pieces of MDF of Contiplas?

heeelllooo mark s Grin Wink

if your diy skills are minimum
why not fit a battom to the wall support the desk at one end with small chest of drawers/bedside cabinet secured up through the lid
and at the other end another set off drawers or book shelves pointing outwards whatever gives you the right hight and knee room

built a desk last week and table top was 29" the knee well was 22" the tower shelf underneath in the knee well was raised to give 25" clearence for  the 5 wheeled chair that has a much bigger footprint than a 4 legged chair

thanks for comments.

I wanted trestles (or similar) because the house is old (1700's) and decoration is old style and I would rather have total discontinuity and a 'modern' look desk in the room than build something with mdf.

Chopping board taken care of with the sink cut outs. Wink

Wolf

I normally square up the offcuts, round over the edges and rout finger grooves in the ends. If the customer has been reasonable with me I present them with a chopping board at the end of the job. If they've not - well all my family now have reasonable chopping boards, so I'll have to start selling them  Wink

Very good Big_all,
must admit i have , done a small set of "platters", more than bowls, in beech ...client, already had a matching cutting/bread board, when they ordered up the worktop,
can be a bit of a nightmare though, it is supposed to be "SOLID" wooden WT, not a chance, some manufacturers are putting a small slither top and bottom, in between other solid pices, so as you start turning the item, you find a void!!!! damn!! that smarts!!! as the chisel catches..... Angry

ouch wolf  Embarrassed Embarrassed
i wonder if the proccess is fully automated and only obvious gaps in the surfaces are noted  after the wood is reformed into worktops at the inspection stage:o
