cutting an internal door
Mar 6th, 2006, 3:33pm

i plan to lay some laminate flooring in kitchen within the coming days-knowing me it will be coming weeks!
but what with the underlay and floor on top-the 2 built in cupboards i have will have to have an inch taken off the bottom.

ok so do i remove the doors and do the decent thing and take them outside and cut or is there a easy method where i can keep them on but still take an inch off the bottom?

thx 4 your help

pete

You should get a far better finish if you take them off and cut them properly.

It is possible to hire a machine to do this but it will cost about £25, plus you need to connect it to a vacuum or there will be dust everywhere. As Jason says it is  better to take them off, and it will probably work out quicker in the long term.

A jigsaw probably won't give you a straight enough cut, a circular saw if you have one with fine teeth would be good or you could always cut them with a hand saw.

Watch for the wood splintering along the cut, it would be worse on top with a circular saw and underneath if you cut it by hand. You can always score a line with a Stanley knife and cut up to that line to prevent this.

I would go for the circular saw if you have access to one, and definitely scribe a line with either a stanley or a marking gauge. If your taking an inch off chances are there will be nothing left of the timber at the bottom of the door, I would recommend replacing that (either the piece that comes out or a new piece planned and glued and clamped. The door needs to come off for that, it should only take a few minutes to remove and I would leave it off while you do the floor, make life a bit easier.

hey guys thx for the interest and replys.
yup looking at it now i think an inch is maybes to much to take off-the end of door by hinges is the bit that is just scraping the top of a board placed-and thats without underlay-so as big-all says 3mm for underlay.so i have scribed a line with stanley knife and will have an attempt with door off and hand saw-dont have access to circular saw-and as wanna keep costs down dont think i will hire one-in the wrong hands etc etc.

probs have loads of questions and problems when i start the flooring so bear with me guys!

cheers again
