12v lights
Nov 10th, 2004, 8:28pm

I've got a set of elv halogen lights run inside a wall for a feature wall holes thingy, transformer type.
They used to be wired up to the ring(coz those were the first cables i came across) in 6mm(coz that was the only cable i had) but when we got re-wired recently, the sparks routed the cables differently and didnt reconnect the lights as they werent originals(coucil property).
now I'd like to take the feeds to these lights from one of the existing ceiling roses downstairs but i dont have a clue how to do it, if the downstairs light is switched that would mean no hot wire when the light is off, so no feed to the 12v ones right?
Theres another light close by that runs off a (3-way?) setup, 2 switches for one bulb. I understand that this should have an always on cable, though doesnt which wire is on depend on how the switches are switched?
I suppose my question is, where do i take the feed wire to the lightswitch for the 12v ones from? can it be from an existing ceiling rose or do i need to run a new feed from the CU? I want these lights to be switchable independantly from the other lights downstairs.
any help much appreciated.

Depends how your lighting has been wired Billy, If its in twin + earth you should have a permanent Live at every ceiling rose, so you could get your feed for your ELV lights from the ceiling rose but how was you planning to switch them?
If you have a conduit system in your house Billy it might not be so easy as the permanent live would be at the switch and then you would have to pick up a neutral from the ceiling rose and break into the conduit
Try and get more information for us and let us know how you was planning to switch your ELV lights

atm they are switched from a lightswitch in the stud wall.
i ran a wire from the old ring to the switch in the wall then back up to the transformer,  taking the neutral direct from the ring. the wiring is still there so hopefully just need to move it from the old j-box i put in to a ceiling rose. does this help. The stud wall i built myself with the lights inside it. I dont know how the house lights are wired atm whether its t+e or not. theres no conduit in the house though so i can get into everything easily enough.

Borrowing neutrals is dangerous Billy, might need to re-think a better arrangement for the supply and switching of them lights, which I gues is what your doing at the moment  Smiley

...

Hope this helps.

Earths ommited for clarity.

Hope your ceiling rose has the above terminals, middle terminal is constant live.
Borrowing neutrals is dangerous Billy,
It's not necessarilly a borrowed neutral if the switch where you are taking your phase from is on the same circuit as the ceiling rose where you get the neutral - this is standard conduit wiring.

Do you have a nearby socket which you could use to feed a spur unit (with 2.5mm T&E), with a 3A fuse?
Ideally it should come from the lighting circuit, but there's nothing wrong with this arrangement.

Its 'borrowing' in my book - He's taken it off the Ring for lighting purposes.

Just to clarify , i meant take a neutral from the same lighting circuit
Borrowing a neutral from a different circuit would be dangerous
I didnt realise Billy had done that though, although i did notice that he had taken the supply from a power circuit without fusing it down which isnt good

ok, the installation was from the ring before, i am changing it to the lighting circuit coz the cables i had connected to are dead now, so both live and neutral are gonna come from the ceiling rose. before all wires came off the ring connected with terminal blocks similar to the picture(omitting the ceiling rose and putting in a T+E instead) I told the spark who did the rewire how i'd done it, he said it wasnt too bad since i'd used 6mm.(mentioned something about 32amps or something with a strange look) Its all past tense now anyhow coz its changing Wink
one thing i noticed was the switch has only 2 connection points, in and out, no L2. Should i get another kind of switch(even though thats not used.)? I know i am showing myself up here! but hey if you dont ask....
The lights are indeed run t+e so i'll be following the picture i guess....

Use 1mm/sq through out.

If you have an L2 at the switch, just leave it empty.

Copper is only good for scrap if you are prepared to strip it back, and this is only really viable in my eyes on 50mm/sq and above  Wink

As lecc said really, don't use 6mm for your lights tho, it's highly unlikely it wont fit in your wiring terminals, also a 1-way switch has Common + L1

a 2-way switch has Common + L1 + L2

You only need a one-way switch for this, 2-way is for upstairs landing lighting where you have a switch downstairs and a switch upstairs...

1mm Twin+Earth cable would be ok to use
